8 Ways To Get Your Home Ready For Spring

Spring time is finally upon us here in Northern Michigan. Here at mPn we are ready for spring and we know you are too after such a long and cold winter, but is your home? After doing some maintenance and cleaning around your property it will be much easier to enjoy the nice weather and another beautiful season by the lakes. mPn offers estate management services to take these tasks off of your to-do list. Here are 8 things to remember when getting your home ready for the warm months of the year:

Clean and repair gutters – Improper drainage could lead to water in places you don’t want it, like the basement or crawl space. Make sure the downspouts drain away from the foundation and are clear and free of any debris.

Replace filters – Replace all of the filters in your home including water and air vent filters. You should replace these filters every 3-6 months depending on the type of filter you have.

Clean faucets and shower heads –First determine the finish of your faucet and then research the best cleaning methods based on that. Some generic ways to clean your faucets and shower heads include, dish soap with warm water, white vinegar, or a toothbrush with baking soda to remove build-up of grime.

Wash windows – Remove the window screens and vacuum them using the handheld attachment. Use your preferred glass cleaner and a microfiber cloth to wipe down the windows. Lastly, dust your window sills and the frame and then touch up any chipped paint around the sill. To lighten your work load, another option is to hire a professional to complete this process for you.

Dust. Dust. Dust. – Take a broom to the corners of the ceiling to get rid of any cobwebs in your kitchen, living room, bedrooms, and bathrooms. Don’t forget to dust the ceiling fans as well as any books or items on bookshelves and desks. After dusting is complete, sweep or vacuum the floors.

Shampoo Carpets – Whether your decide to have your carpets professionally cleaned or you rent a steamer (which are available at most box retailers and home stores) and do it yourself, it is important to clean your carpets once or twice per year. Be sure to do plenty of research on your carpet steamer and read the instructions in depth before use.

Deep clean your fridge and cabinets – You probably wipe down your fridge’s shelving on the regular already, but don’t forget about the rest of it. Remove the drawers and door shelves and wash with warm, soapy water or a disinfecting wipe to get rid of any bacteria and spillage. For the cabinets, remove all items and wipe them down top to bottom. Don’t forget to get rid of any outdated or unwanted items, then put everything else back neatly.

Get organized – Organize your medicine cabinets, bathroom drawers, and closets. This will free up space and make things easier to find in the future. Additionally, pack away winter clothing and bring out the beach towels and swimsuits!
